Laura's Wall, North End

   Cayman islands  Caribbean Sea
This was our first return to the Caribbean following several trips to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. To be honest, it was a little disappoiting compared to the Pacific.

Of course, Stingray City is a great dive and there were several turtle encounters, but there were NO sharks, few soft coral, and marginally healthy hard corals.

This is a good destination for new divers as there are few currents, enough animal life to keep it interesting, and very warm water; it was 86 degrees when we were there!

Ginima-an

   Philippines
This divesite in Dauin is made out of old car tires that are overgrown with corals and sponges. Lots of critters in this area seem to like this kind of house. The tires are at about 60ft and the shallow area has some nice seagrass to go critter hunting in. You can find different kinds of frogfish here, nudibrachs, nice anemone's, shrimps and lots of other little stuff.

Critter Junction

   Fiji  Pacific
This is the shore dive / house reef located in front of Matava - Fiji's Premier Eco Adventure Resort.

As the name states, it's a wonder of sights for critters of all shapes and sizes from mantis shrimp to seahorses to anemone fish to rough nosed pipefish!

Shark Alley

   Fiji  Pacific
Shark Alley - Well say no more!

What can we say about this electric dive site. Ride the currents down the middle of Naiqoro Passage into circling Grey Reef Sharks and dart aorund the bottom between White Tip Reef Sharks.

All moving along gracefully in the current. website

Definitely one of our must see dive sites!

Spot X

   Fiji  Pacific
So named by a divemaster who marked it on the map inside the reef at Naiqoro Marine Reserve with a big X.

This delicate dive site is one of the best places to get those marvelous Great Astrolabe Reef acropora table coral shots. Many huge specimens here all in pristine condtion.

Road Rage

   Fiji  Pacific
Previously called Purple Wall, Road Rage was renamed by one of our regular divers who said that the ripping currents and overwhelming numbers of fish traffic here just weren't well enough described by a "wall dive".

Drop in at the end the Naiqoro Marine Reserve passage and descend to the bottom to be swept into the mouth of the channel to get caught up in the traffic!

Santa Maria Caves

   Malta  Mediterranean Sea
A stunning dive with wonderful easy caves, and great marine life. At an average of only 10 mts it is one of my top three sites ever. I have dived it over a few hundred time now and it still lights me up.

Spiegel Grove, Key Largo, Fla. & Vandenberg, Key West Fla.

   United States  Atlantic (South)
Wreck dives, Spiegel Grove viz was not as good as I expected, mostly 30 ft to 40 ft, USNS Vandenberg has strong currents and viz also was limited, not much marine life on the Vandenberg, it will be pristine in a couple of years when the marine life moves on it. So far all that is there are a couple of Groupers, under 100 pounds. Phillipines was a great dive site as well, Dumaghette & Puerto Galera, pristine reefs, easy diving mostly shallow dives down to 90 feet. The Carribean is the Carribean, the reefs are dying and the big animal life is hard to find, Cozumel is always great for a fast drift and tunnels and swim throughs, I stay away from cave diving. Costa Rica on the NW side of the country, Hermosa, has some big animals and the viz is poor because of the planten in the water to feed the big boys. The South Pacific has my interest, this year I went to Fla. and going to Dominica and then to Borneo for 2 weeks.

Lembeh Straits

   Indonesia  Molucca Sea
Muck diving! There are some small walls inthe Lembeh straits and some reefs, but mainly it's about the muck. Vast plains of black or white sand. This is the Serengeti of the underwater world. Nowhere to hide but under the sand. In this environment, it's hide, eat, look really deadly or be eaten. There are creatures here that are too weird - things you would expect from deep sea creatures or other planets. It may not be strong current adreneline diving, but you gotta camera, there's lots to photograph.

I dived with NAD, which was a small resort with only beer being the only alcohol - there's no bar, but it's small, friendly and the guides are great - especially Nan. Rooms are comfy, but the roof runs along the length of all rooms, so there can be some noise. Food is buffet style and very nice.

I then dived with Lembeh Resort - twice the price but rooms, food, drinks nicer. Still, diving's still the same, so depends on your budget and comfort needs. colourful deeper walls full of macro life and walls against the shore covered in invertebrate life right up to the surface. At night these walls are an explosion of colour and its the best night dive site I have ever dived

CoCo View Resort shore dive

   Honduras  Caribbean Sea
Both male and female sailfins are located on the sandy bottom near the hang line in 20-25 feet of water. These tiny blennies are shy and require patience if you want to see them fully emerge from their holes. The male's performance with sailfin up lasts only a couple of seconds. His movement is fast so using a high shutter speed is necessary to stop the action.

United States  Atlantic (North American coastal)
Excellent Shore dive!!!!
Just 100 meters fom shore, you are on top of the first reef.
Taking reference of the Anglin Pier, 50 meters past the end of the pier, you are on top of the second reef. marine life is abundant, and the coral is very much alive.

Vertigo, Yap

   Micronesia  Philippine Sea
This dive site on the outer reef is the deepest drop-off on the west coast of the island, plunging steeply down to 100m. It is also the location for the weekly shark feeds. The sharks are baited either by suspending the bait on the end of a line from the surface or by placing a crate on the reef top. Both methods results in a whole lot of sharks turning up for a free lunch. It's mainly grey reefs and blacktips that are visible, but up to ten different types are regularly spotted. If you like big animals and adrenaline-charged dives, this is the one for you. The feeding frenzy also attracts a myriad of other fish hoping for a taste of the action, including large coral groupers. The shallow reef top, which rises up to 6m and has a scattering of hard and soft corals, is a great place to chill after the excitement of the feed.
