Baleal

   Portugal  Atlantic
Great diversity of macro subjects, especially nudibranchs and other opistobranchs (a.k.a. sea slugs).
Large wreck in poor conditions provides good subjects for wide angle. Due to the very poor visibility (with exceptions) it's very rare to be able to use wide angle lenses with effective results.
Only a couple of dive centers in the vicinity 3km away.

Wreck of the Ondonga, Long Island Sound

   United States  Atlantic
The Odonga is a 275' freighter that sunk in 1918.
Typically of harbor wrecks she was blown up as a hazard to shipping but there is still loads of recognizable wreckage including plenty of hull
Loads of marine life in and around the wreck

Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven

   United Kingdom  Irish Sea
Don't be put off by all the local industrial plants. This bay is a corker and pretty sheltered in most blows.
I dived this with a club squidgey boat. I can't remember the name of the wreck but it was the easiest wreck I've ever found and only 3M at the top. Next to a buioy I think.
Second dive was a drift over a flat seabed. Everyone else though it was crap but if you looked close it was gopping with macro life

The Sound Of Mull

United Kingdom  Sea of the Hebrides
This was my first 50M dive!
I remember sliding down a fantastic wall, getting narked at 50M and ascending pulling at all the sea pens, which quickly retracted!
On the surface the seals look at you like 'what are you doing' as they sit undisturbed on various rocks. If you're lucky they'll follow you underwater too.
Fantastic stuff

Swanage Pier night diving

   United Kingdom
Swanage pier is the ideal night dive. Even though the pier itself closes at dusk it remains easily accessible from the beach in front of the adjacent yacht club. The marine life on the night shift differs considerably from that found during the day. Even barren ground, such as the sand flats, plays host to flatfish, baby cuttle, and squid.

Tompot BlennyAt night the wall where the hardboats moor is accessible with out the danger of a prop behind the ear, it comes alive with prawns squat lobsters, and tompot blennies.

On one night dive last year I was attracted by the frenetic swinging beam of my buddy’s torch and, upon investigating, discovered the object of his attentions was the largest conger eel I have ever seen! It was inhabiting a discarded drainage pipe that, on a dive earlier that day, I was poking my arm into!

St Abbs, Seagull Rock

   United Kingdom
Another popular site at St Abbs is Seagull Rock, which has a large cave cut out of the seaward side. Unlike the well-known Cathedral Rock, this site is best dived at high water, as the lower the state of tide the more slippery rocks you have to negotiate. The best route is to swim out along the sewage pipe that is clearly visible from the car park. Raw sewage is discharged from this pipe so if you use the toilet on the harbour front before your dive there is a very good chance that you will meet anything you put down it again on your way out. Still, the fish seem to like it, so don’t be put off; just keep your DV firmly in your mouth!

Further up the coast, just around St Abbs head, is Petticowick Bay, a picturesque cove boasting a Divers Only car park. Petticowick is reached either by a short drive through the nature reserve, or by boat from St Abbs harbour. This is an interesting site, mostly kelp, but with reefs where rare marine life has been recorded. Probably the most spectacular sights observed here though are the diving seabirds ‘flying’ underwater. This site is completely sheltered from southerly winds and a good alternative to St Abbs at such times

Gildenburgh Water

   United Kingdom
Looking for great Pike shots?

Pike may be able to avoid most anglers, but they will usually allow divers to approach and study them, beating a hasty retreat only at the last moment. They are nevertheless frustratingly difficult to capture on film. As an underwater photographer, I have spent much time trying to get the pike shot - you know, the one that is a definitive expression of the popular image. Unfortunately I have not, to my own satisfaction, so far succeeded.

Kevin Cullimore, probably the country’s top freshwater u/w photographer, had long urged me to try my luck at Gildenburgh Water. He recommends a 28mm lens to capture medium to large pike on film - and plenty of patience

Plymouth Shore Diving

   United Kingdom  Atlantic
The shore diving is some of the best in Britain. Shore diving is especially good in the vicinity of Bovisand Fort (the old national diving centre) but it is often ignored in favour of the offshore wrecks. However, this area is, in fact, immensely scenic, especially the rock-pools and gullies immediately in front of the bar.

In the shallows, stringweeds such as bootlace weed and throngweed reach to the surface in many places, forming a canopy with the falling tide. See website

Isla de la Plata, Manabí, Machalilla National Park

   Ecuador  Pacific
La Plata Island bottoms are, most of the time, made up of rock combined with massive Coral Reef Patches in good condition, coral fans (Gorgonians) and sand areas. The fauna is very rich and interesting, there are big groups of reef fishes like: angelfish, butterfly fish, trumpet fish, flute fish, jacks, sea basses, puffer fish, balloon fish, morays, snappers, trigger fish, parrot fish, scorpion fish, manta rays, guitar rays and white tip sharks. We can also see some green marine turtles, different species of sea stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers.

Archipielago Los Roques

   Venezuela  Caribbean Sea
Archipielago Los Roques is a National Park protected since ~ 1972. The biodiversity there is amaizing and the clarity of the water is equal or better compared with the most known places around the world. You have all the facilities to practice scuba diving, snorkelling and specially to make the underwater photography the most interesting challenge. A perfect place for wide-angle and macro UW photography and also for who are interested in fish photography.
I highly recommend this site for all kind of diving activities, the people is very friendly and almost everybody can speak in english. You have PADI and SSI diving centers and a lot of little hotel (2 stars) just to rest after the diving activities. Is a national Park and the facilities are not resort-like (5 stars).
If you want to check the kind of picture that you can get there, try to acquire the Book :"PECES del Archipielago Los Roques" in Spanish and written by Humberto Ramirez Nahim (UW Photographer) and Fernando Cervigon. Agencia Espanola de Cooperacion Internacional.

Best Regards & enjoy your next visit

Islas Baleares

   Spain  Mediterranean Sea
Menorca has very clear water all year round, there is diveschools all round the Island so diving is possible any day of the year. Water temperature goes down to 12ºC in spring and a comfortable 24ºC during the summer months. The north side of the island has a marine reserve that allows divers with a permit (easy to get), there marine life is recuperating from the rediculous fishing regulations in Europe that allows overfishing to the professionals and is tough on sportfishermen with their speargun... We do have very interesting caves all round the island, very good places for photography. Marine flora is abundant and makes dives rather colourfull on sunny days. There is a few wrecks worth the dive for the ones that like depth, below 40. As far as I know one of the best places to dive in the Mediterranean Sea.

Harry's Hole

   Netherlands Antilles  Caribbean Sea
This is the house reef for the Sunset Waters Beach Resort. The resort is very nice with excellent service.

The reef is easily accessible from a man-made lagoon and so well marked that it is a cinch to navigate day or night. You needn't stay at the resort to dive here. If you are a shore diver (like me), follow the sign to "Airplane Wreck" (adjacent site) and rent your taks at Sunset Divers (on the premises).

Seahorses and frogfish are common on the reef. Inqure at the dive shop about the latest sightings. They keep informed and will happily direct you to the latest sightings.

Gorgona Island

   Colombia  Pacific
I don't know who would rate this magical Island absurd. There are more than six authorized sites to dive. I would say that conditions vary, but is pacific and you really need to have a good guide that knows the tides in order to obtain the best visibility. I have seen whale shark, manta ray, white tip reef sharks and a lot of turtles. This is the huge stuff. Barracuda rings are often, parrot fish, grunts, morays, angel fish, butterfly fish, groupers, rays, idols amongs a lot of jacks. To me a wounderful place!!!!!!!!!

Abyss Kythnos

   Greece
It is a fantastic dive site. Some they call it Abyss (dive site name), some they call it the Narkosis Theater and some they call it Horse Head. Only one thing I can tell It is really amazing. Only when you dive there you can understand what I mean.

Canyons

   Philippines

Canyons
22m-32m (72ft-105ft)

Travel Time: 6min

Ability Level
Flood Tide - Adventurous (Advance Divers + )
Ebb Tide - Adventurous (Advance Divers + )
/ Wild (Advanced Divers with signbificant experience)

An advanced dive that requires a good dive guide to allow for the currents to sweep you into position. Racing over several small drop-offs below the Hole in the Wall covered in soft corals and sponges, you can duck into and one of the Canyons for a respite from the current. There is much to find on the bottom but primarily it is the large schools of snapper, emperors, sweetlips, barracudas, jacks, trevally and occasional sharks that make this an exciting dive. The dive ends at a 1½m/5' anchor embedded in the coral, where the group can gather before being swept off to the safety stop in the current. Excellent Nitrox dive. The most popular dive site in Puerto Galera - you'll want to go back time after time.
