This was our first return to the Caribbean following several trips to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. To be honest, it was a little disappoiting compared to the Pacific. Of course, Stingray City is a great dive and there were several turtle encounters, but there were NO sharks, few soft coral, and marginally healthy hard corals. This is a good destination for new divers as there are few currents, enough animal life to keep it interesting, and very warm water; it was 86 degrees when we were there!

There is a small wall that goes to about 65 feet, then a sandy area with a coral encrusted BBQ grill and a small wreck. Most divers stay shallower than he wreck; however, it's possible to do a deep dive here by continuing past the wreck. The bottom slopes gradually past the wreck to depths in excess of 130 feet (my personal max depth on this site). In addition to the regular gang of reef fish, both adults and juveniles, we often see spotted eagle rays, large green morays, and turtles here. I've also seen seahorses and a toad fish at this site. Dolphins regularly pass through.

This is the most popular site for drift diving in Utila. The primary wall descends to approximately 70 feet, and then there is a sloping descent to a sandy bottom. Along the sand channel that separates these two areas, divers drift past caverns where they see abundant marine life. Spotted drums, squirrel fish, moray eels, trunk fish, trigger fish, turtles, sting rays, and midnight parrot fish are the standard fare.

Diving on the Nekton Rorqual they spent a dive or so on this pier as there are lots of seahorse and other interesting things to see. This is shot on Kodachrome 25 and is a very low resolution scan. Has to be the best 32 foot dive I have ever done, but the best way to do it is to walk to the end of the pier, jump in and swim back..... most of the really good stuff is almost all the way at the end of the pier. I saw 5 different seahorse and all sorts of other juvenile fish.......

Shallow sand channels, deep channels, a cavern, and a steep wall provide something of interest for everyone. Hundreds of fish usually congregate here, and we often see large turtles, green morays, and rays at this site. Hard and soft corals abound, and the reef is amazing here. Be careful as you explore, if you do an unguided dive. It's called the Maze for a reason!

This site has a small wall starting around 35 feet and continuing to 90 about feet. Although there is a drop-off further out to sea, only tech divers explore the outer reaches of this site. In addition to seeing a myriad of hard and soft corals, recreational divers often see spotted eagle rays, turtles, and green morays here in addition to the more common Caribbean marine species. Although most divers dive this site from a day boat, it is also accessible from the shore.
