Interpolation

Interpolation is a process employed by digital cameras and photo editing software to make an image larger. The algorithms sample pixels and ‘guesstimates’ what the extra pixels required should look like. Interpolation is a dirty word when used by camera manufacturers to describe how many MegaPixels their camera will output. Or is it? In reality most digital cameras interpolate pixels to arrive at images.
