There are several types of viewfinder…
- EVF - Electronic ViewFinder - a small color
LCD with a magnified lens that functions as an eye level viewfinder. Usually
found on video camcorders but they have been showing up on super-zoom digicams
where optical viewfinders are impractical.
- Rangefinder
- The viewfinder on most cameras is a separate viewing
device that is independent of the lens. Usually it is an optical window whose
field of view approximates that of the lens. Often mounted above and to the
right or left of the lens. It exhibits a problem known as parallax when trying
to frame subjects closer than five feet from the camera so it is advisable to
use the color LCD when shooting close-ups for this very reason.
- TTL
- By means of an ingenious optical system comprising a prism and a
mirror (that flips out of the way the instant before the shutter opens) a
Through The Lens viewfinder can preview the image exactly as it will be
recorded. It should be noted however, that sometimes the coverage is only 90%.
- Sportsfinder
- detachable, extra large viewfinder found on
top-of-the-range SLR (TTL) cameras.
