Very interesting. Did the lion fish only have one feather?
The photo is a relatively new sub species of lion fish, however the spot on the feather is on the opposite side to the photograph I have, which I will upload tomorrow. Do you have any other pics of him ? Steve

On the head of the common lionfish there are usually two, extensions, ornately patterned, shown in this picture. In the new / evolving species these are replaced by two feather like extensions, with a single eye on each feather. In our photographs, the eyes are on different sides of the feather.
I have emailed the scientist who is studying this to ask him if it is significant

I have found a few other photos from the same place. There are at least 4 different specimen. With and witout the white ring.
