message this message is important Dear Nick,
thank for your latest submission to the UWP contest smile

You had requested a review/critique of your photo. Let me shortly explain how it works :
I will structure my critique into a few chapters : (my) first impression, Technical ( exposure, sharpness etc.), Composition,
Subject and problem areas & suggested solutions and my personal epilogue.

As we do have a limited space for each post here, please prepare that my critique will be like around 2-3 posts in total If you are online & see my first part of review : Please wait with your answer
( in case you want write any ) untill my critique is completed - thank you smile

Important : The new "photo critique" feature here at UWP is not for to "slaughter" uw photos - it is meant to give a helping hand with an analytic review & to suggest solutions.
The objective is to see you here as winner one day smile

and here we go :

message  Photo Critique, PART I

First impression
My first impressions were 1) "Colours ok", 2) "Portrait or Abstract ?"

Technical
Exposure is good, colours are natural, sharpness and DOF ( depht of field ) are ok.

Composition
Well, that's the tricky part ;-) Was that pic meant as fish-portrait or as abstract ?
Fish-portraits should feature the main characteristics of the animal and they better do not cut some important parts.
In my opinium, the animal's head is at the wrong place in the frame - eye & mouth are sticked to the outer edge
of the frame....give it some space ;-) The position ( angle ) in general is not too bad and I got your idea.
Front/diagonal angle is often used for this kind og shots.
Abstract shots can be a just a particular area of a marine animal, but at the end it must be clear to understand to what it belongs to.Your pic is more or less between abstract & portrait.

message  Photo Critique, PART II

Subject
Close approach...that's good. You went close to your model...maybe even a bit too close ;-)

Problem areas and solutions
Composition : give fish portrait shots a litte more space around the "model". Some photographers here
do work with the "negative space" ( empty areas ) very artistic. This is a contest - look around and check
the pics of some other members here - I am sure, you'll get great inspiration ;-)

Final opinium & epilogue :
Get inspired by others ! The more uw pics you view the better you'll get an idea how to shoot your own ones.
You maybe will find the UWP uw photo course helpfull for to learn the basics :

All the best,
