message this message is important Dear Bernard,
You have requested a review of your photo.
Remember that critical comments are meant to help you improve your work with an analytic review.
As you already know the foreword, I will directly start with my review :

Photo Critique :

First impression :
Hmmm… tight frame : special cropping

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 ) :
Exposure : 4, Colours: 4, Sharpness: 3, DOF ( depth of field ) : 4, Contrast : 4

Suggested Solution :
You can solve a part of the colours, contrast and exposure problems using the RAW (or DNG) file format. With this file, you can work in post production on the computer and correct them a bit.
Then, try to have a better sharpness on the eyes … the first thing that humans try to catch is the look.

Composition :
Tight frame, special cropping

I perfectly see that you try to fill the frame with your animal with a special cropping. Filling the frame is good, but doing it with cropping is not the perfect way to do it, even if you don’t keep standard ratios. Try to do it while shooting.
Again, try to keep standard ratios (such as 2/3, 3/4 or 5/7).
For a profile picture, it’s a too tight frame … give place to the animal to let it swim.

Subject
I like to say that Lion fish are maybe one of the best friends of the underwater photographers : nice colours, they swim slowly and we can easily go closer smile
The only small problem is that they like to swim with the head “down”.

message  Suggested Solution :
For another time, it could be good to have the animal looking at you or turning in your direction, to feel an interaction or a movement. Remember that pictures must tell something, they should give a message or an emotion. It’s also difficult to always have a good impact with profile pictures. With a face to face, a kind of upward angle of shooting is perfect for this animal.

Epilogue
Here, in UWP, there’s a lot of Lion fish pictures … it’s very difficult to do something new with this animal, but it’s always possible smile … have a look at these pictures, it will give you a lot of different ideas … then try to do something different to surprise every body.
All the best and happy bubbles.
