message this message is important Dear Benjamin,
Thank for your latest submission to the UWP contest smile

You've requested a critique of your photo. How it works :
I will structure my critique into a few chapters and will list some suggested solutions to problem zones ( if there are any ). My critique will be like 2-3 posts in total, please wait with any answers until you see the note 'photo critic completed' - thanks smile

As we photo critics do this job as volunteers, a 'thank you' is always appreciated (no 'thanks' = no more critiques ).

Photo critiques here at UWP are meant to give a helping hand with an analytic review & to suggest solutions. The objective is to see you here as winner one day smile

And here we go ( critique/review starts with the next post ) !

First impression
He ? What ? What happened ?????

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 )
Exposure : 2, Colours: 2, Sparpness: 2, DOF ( depht of field ) : 2, Contrast : 3

Suggestions :
I think, your camera was slightly overwhelmed with this shooting scenery. But as the S90 does support manual mode, you should stick with that one. As we shoot underwater, it is always appreciated to see the colour "blue"....especially in silhuette shots ;-)

Composition
Centered subject, wrong colours, not close enough.

Suggestions :
I got your idea and I always love to see creative photography. But : please beware of colours, go closer to your subject and never ever center the subject in the frame roll eyes

How to win a contest ( like this one ) with a lionfish photo ? Yes, they are interesting subjects and I recoknized your attemp to do a different shot of it. The silhuette idea is good. But ( please forgive me !! ) : on the first view your lionfish looked like a flying crow in a forest to me ;-)

Suggestions :
Shapes are cool. I love shapes ! Creativity is cool. I love creative minds ! But before running we need to learn how to walk, first. I suggest that you better step away from the sunball idea and work with little bit more balanced light conditions. This is of course just a suggestion smile

Epilogue
The shoot you've tried to take might require a different gear. Bit heavy for a CANON S90....but this doesn't mean that this camera cannot shoot winning photos. It indeed can !!! ...and I wish you that we will see a winning shot of yours one day in future smile

All the best,

Rico

message Hi Benjamin !
I am sorry for my bad english ( I am french )
I personnely find there is not always the choice to put the subject there we want , when the sun more a fish are in the same line , because the moment must taken very rapidly !
So , I find your picture very well like that ! The softness more the originality give a very pretty result !
I like it !
