| Underwater Photo Contest Entry | |
| Dear Charlie, You have requested a review of your photo. It’s my turn to write you now some critical comments to help you to improve your work with an analytic review. As you know, the objective is to see you here on UWP as a winner one day ! You have already read the foreword, so I will directly start my review : Photo Critique : First impression : A hiden stingray … Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 ) : Exposure : 3, Colours: 4, Sharpness: 4, DOF ( depth of field ) : 5, Contrast : 4 Suggested Solution : It’s difficult to have a perfect light in such situation. As you notice certainly, there’s a disturbing shadow at the front of the stingray and its right part is not lighted enough. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

| | Next time I suggest you in such situation to prefer a close up shot and to take in picture only an interesting detail with your compact camera. Now, to have better results in the contest with this common animal, you’ve to work especially on composition and approach. Composition : Between two kinds of composition Suggested Solution : Without changing too many things, I suggest you, next time, to leave more room in front of your subject, and for a kind of general view try not to cut a part of the subject, it doesn't give a perfect impression. Shooting the whole animal you can use the tail to give an interesting perspective. A more upwards angle of shooting (or minimum at the same level) would be better as well, if you do that, you wouldn’t have the rock on the top hiding a small part of the eye of your subject. Human looks go first to the eyes … that’s why it’s important to see them perfectly on a picture. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

| | Subject With a common subject like a blue spotted stingray, it’s often difficult to do something new. This animal is very attractive and interesting for the underwater photographer : nice colours, not easily afraid, we can go closer, … it usually gives the opportunity to try different compositions and effects if we have a good approach of course Suggested Solution : For another time, having a more opposite interaction between you and the stingray should be tested (if it was possible in that situation). Especially, with this animal it's very impressive. An opposite approach usually accentuates the interaction between the animal and the photographer and gives good results. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

| | Epilogue I like to say that pictures must tell something, they should pass on a message or transmit an emotion; this picture is like a paparazzi one … (with a better quality of course) … we go in the intimate of a stingray “rest” :-), In UWP there’s a lot of stingray picture pictures… just let you get inspired by others ... In general, the more uw pictures you view the better you'll get ideas to try for your own shots. Keep on the good work, and for sure, you will have good results. I’m looking forward to see your next post. All the best and happy bubbles. Raoul (UWP Photo Critic) --------Photo Critique completed-------- | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member
