message  Dear Cedric,
Thank for your latest submission to the UWP contest smile

You've requested a critique of your photo. How it works :
I will structure my critique into a few chapters and will list some suggested solutions to problem zones ( if there are any ). My critique will be like 2-3 posts in total, please wait with any answers until you see the note 'photo critic completed' - thanks smile

As we photo critics do this job as volunteers, a 'thank you' is always appreciated (no 'thanks' = no more critiques ).

Photo critiques here at UWP are meant to give a helping hand with an analytic review & to suggest solutions. The objective is to see you here as winner one day smile

And here we go ( critique/review starts with the next post ) !

First impression
"once in a lifetime !!!"

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 )
Exposure : 5, Colours: 3, Sparpness: 4, DOF ( depht of field ) : 4, Contrast : 4

Suggestions :
Considering the shooting situation I think this is more or less technically the best possible result. A slight contrast lift during postproduction could improve impact, but that's just hair-slpitting ;-)

This composition lives from the subject, the sunrays and the slightly rounded water surface. 3 good composition elements - well done !

Suggestions :
Most judges usually forget their manners when huge animals are to see in a photo ;-) Well, here my suggestions : a bit more space to the left so that your whale has space to swim. Have the whales fin pointing to the lower right corner of the frame could bring a great 4th composition element smile

message Thanks Michaelg. The gentle giants are with us from July to October. I'd say September and october are the best months, when calves are bigger and more confident.
