message this message is important Dear Alan,

thank for your latest submission to the UWP contest smile

You've requested a critique of your photo. How it works :
I will structure my critique into a few chapters and will list some suggested solutions to problem zones
( if there are any ). My critique will be like 2-3 posts in total, please wait with any answers untill
you see the note "photo critic completed" - thanks smile

As we photo critics do this job as volunteers, a "thank you" is always appreciated
( no "thanks" = no more critiques ).

Photo critiques here at UWP are meant to give a helping hand with
an analytic review & to suggest solutions.
The objective is to see you here as winner one day smile

And here we go ( critique/review starts with the next post ) !

First impression
Medusa – Art experiment? smile

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 )
Exposure : 3, Colours: 3, Sparpness: 2, DOF ( depht of field ) : 2, Contrast : 4

Suggestions :
If you use an external strobe you should brin the light more central. The right side of the jelly is very dark. Focus point is on the dark tentacle (should be on the stomach or the nerve net).

Composition :
Shooting angle is good. Blue water behind the jelly I like. Wrong distance to the subject.

Suggestions :
You have to decide if you like to make a jelly-art shot (go very close and shoot just a part of the jelly, play with DOF) or a full jelly shot (more distance, without cutting the jelly). It looks like you could not choose between this two variations.

message  Subject :
Jellyfish are my favorite subjects. The mix between colours and transparence, the fragility, using perfectly the natural and strobe light ... this all makes a jelly to one of the most dificult subjects for a good photo.

Suggestions :
Very important is the distance to the subject. Before you shoot you have to think about what you like to show? Special details (super macro) or the beauty of the movement of a jelly (more distance, give the jelly more space in the frame)?

Epilogue :
The camera settings and shooting angle are ok. The position of the strobe and the distance to the subject can be improved. The focus must be on the most interesting point of your photo. If you aware of all this points, you come closer to a winner photo. Looking forward to see your next submit.
All the best,

Roland
