Hey thanks. Guess I'm not too sure WHAT they are. There was a school of around 6-8 of them, and they kept their disatance. I slowly advanced, and was able to swim right alongside for awhile. It was a blast!

message After consulting some foto books, I'm pretty sure it's a cuttlefish. Any other votes out there?

message Its funny, I've just had a long running argument with one of our club members on this very subject, so I'm still full of self-righteous indignation: Cuttlefish are ambush predators, they very rarely travel in a group unless breeding, squid are almost always in a group. Squid are streamlined for fast swimming (or whatever they do), cuttlefish are more 'squat' looking. Cuttlefish usually have a 'hinged' head, they can look straight down whilst pointing forwards. Squid have to bend their tentacles down to achieve the same effect. Anyway, I think its more exciting to get a shot of squid, they are usually much more camera shy and difficult to spot!

Well, SOMEBODY'S done their homework. Nevertheless, these creatures are morphologically similar to my textbook picture of a cuttlefish, so you still haven't convinced me.

I can't seem to get back to your original picture to find out where it was taken, this is a carribean reef squid on wikipedia which seems like a fairly close match. They advise examination of internal structures to be really sure, even I'm not that pedantic...
