category: Wide Angle - Marine Life
location: Pacific Mexico
message Fantastic photo, I wish I would get in gear and go on one of those Mexico trips.
The light on the marlin is just perfect. What month of the year was this taken? smile

Answer Thanks, it makes it easier with the lighting when you're on the surface:). Fortunately everything seems to stay very shallow. The time of year when we have sailfish/striped marlin is in may. We're still in the process of figuring out what other seasons there are with the baitballs. Recently we found a thresher shark on a baitball. It's pretty exciting.

message Sound neat, we have been going to the East Cape and Cabo for 40 years, done a lot of fishing , mostly catch and release, and the diving we have done has either been at Cabo near lands end or Cabo Pumo reef. But have never had the luck to be in the water near a bait ball.

Answer I have heard of baitballs near the east cape, but especially on the pacific side during the months of july, aug., and sept. That's when many of the fishermen are catching silky sharks and seeing bait. This was taken in the revilagigedos, 240 mi south, where we have baitballs year round.

message I realize that, but when fishing the capt go balistic if you want to get in the water with a camera, he's sure your gonna die. That's why I'd like to go down the the area you were diving. What boat do you go out with?

Answer I go with the solmar v. This is the only boat that knows anything about the baitballs in revillagigedo. I haven't done any baitball stuff on the pacific side yet, but my friends tell me that magdalena bay has some amazing baitballs with sharks, etc. There are also baitballs near isla mujeres near cancun during the months of jan. and feb. I have a friend who owns a dive shop in cancun and he says it's amazing.
