message  Dear Craig,
Thank for your latest submission to the UWP contest smile

You've requested a critique of your photo. How it works :
I will structure my critique into a few chapters and will list some suggested solutions to problem zones ( if there are any ). My critique will be like 2-3 posts in total, please wait with any answers until you see the note 'photo critic completed' - thanks smile

Photo critiques here at UWP are meant to give a helping hand with an analytic review & to suggest solutions. The objective is to see you here as winner one day smile

And here we go ( critique/review starts with the next post ) !

First impression
a seahorse out of the dark smile

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 )
Exposure : 4, Colours: 5, Sharpness: 4, DOF ( depth of field ) : 4, Contrast : 4

Suggestions :
your subject seems a bit underexposed. I love the dark background though. Maybe using a lower f-stop would 1)have given more light 2) create a bokeh background, making your subject stand more out. By directing your light source more from right to left the head of the seahorse would also stand out more. smile

Composition
your subject is right in the middle of your frame.
The bright thing in the background is a bit disturbing.

Suggestions :
try shooting from different angles, maybe getting the critter more from the front. Play more with the diagonals. It looks as if you have cropped your pic in order to put the horsie right in the middle. Keeping more negative space would add more interestingness

Seahorses are really beautiful critters but infinitly hard to capture well as they have this silly attitude to turn and face down as soon as you approach

Suggestions
you captured this one really well and it needs really lots of patience to get an interesting and outstanding shot. Using the right lens is important as well. A 105mm will give you the right magnification without having to get too close to the subject, while a 60mm needs to get real close...

Epilogue
I love the atmosphere of this shot! Combining special lightening techniques and skittish critters isn't easy smile I'm sure you have the patience and knowledge to keep on practicing . That's what it's all about! Not to forget the fun facto too!!!

All the best,

Mona
