The Giant barrel sponges were "going off" - looked like a foggy morning in San Francisco. Long Cay at Lighthouse Atoll, 80 fsw.
This Tiger Grouper needs to learn to swallow head first - that's the tip of the squirrel fish's tail protruding from the grouper's gills. A little worse for wear and tear, the squirrel fish escaped.

I was taking shots for a book on sponges when this huge Black Grouper wondered over. I wanted to get a picture of the big fish with some sponges, so I gently tricked him into the perfect position. Belize, 45fsw

This is the shot I took right after the one that just won the Global National Geographic Photographic Competition (Nature category). I was astounded that the little crustacean held still that long. Peppermint shrimp in a branching vase sponge 75 fsw.

Within a branching vase sponge, lit from outside with a UK Light Cannon, a peppermint shrimp comes forward... Have to get very close with the camera and the torch, but the slightest touch sends the shrimp running.
