Aliens Everywhere! During the summer we get large congrigations of Moon Jellies. These groupings only last a couple weeks and sometimes we can see thousands during the course of a dive.
A tongue of flame! This Opalescent Nudibranch was just coming up from a 100ft wall climb and paused for a rest before continuing on looking for a mate or meal!
Runaway Red Octopus! This lovely little Pacific Red Octopus had enough of the lime light and decided to speed off. I really enjoy the blurr of following it while swimming. It only went 15-20ft then settled down again!
On a recent dive just off Vancouver Island we ran into a school of 12-15 Spiny Dogfish Sharks. They were standoffish at first then this 5-6 footer swam up for a closer look and I managed to get this close up from only a couple 4-5ft away! Enjoy!
Pygmy Seahorse! These amazing creatures are one of natures most amazing species. We saw three variations but this ones face was priceless!
The Spotted Ratfish comes into shallow waters in the summer to mate and if you are lucky they will pause to check themselves out in your port!
This Cuttlefish was so cute that we had to take a picture!
Spiny Perfection. This seahorse was trying to hide behind the grass but didn't blend in well with the green colour!
Strike a pose! This Nudibranch was perched pertfectly on beautiful blue tunicate and allowed me to take several shots before speeding off!
Blue Emperor on Blue Starfish! Taken with Canon 100mm macro and Aquatica housing with a +10 diopter. Amazingly agile little critters!
Mini Jaws! These little anenome fish were nestled in their homes until you got too close for a photo then they would dart out and nip your wherever they could OUCH! Little fish BIG attitiude!
" Resilience " we are constantly surprsied by the ability of the Ocean to deal with the human degridation of our waters. This sandal was at the bottom beside a small village and completely encrusted in coral.
Juvenille Wolf Eel! These younger wolf eels have the most bright and beautiful colours. Later in life they take on a more subdued grey. This one was hiding out under some bark at about 40ft and was only about 24inches long.
A newly born Squid that we followed around for ten minutes before it finally sat down for a rest! Taken with a Canon T2I and 100mm macro lens in an Aquatica housing and +10 diopter!
Burst Of Color! When on the search for a mate one must look there best!
Underwtaer Flying Spaghetti Monster! This colourful little Nudibranch on the tunicates reminded me of pictures of the above titled monster and the colours of it really are out of this world!
On the Attack! This Flamboyant Cuttlefish was found on a dusk dive and walked hovered and swam over the bottom hunting for nearly 25 minutes with us. They really do display some vivid colors.
Standing out in a Crowd! There always has to be one part of a subject that doesn't quite fit the norm. In this case one of several hundred jacks in a large bait ball was going the opposite direction.
A bright smiling face! Nudibranch perched on ledge just about crawled out of focus. But left me with a smiling face just before exiting!
A beautiful clear day and some willing subjects made for some close focus wide angle practice.
Jelly on Oiled Canvas. This Jellyfish was just below the surface with slightly choppy water. This allowed the rock face from above to be reflected by the surface giving it the oiled look. Taken with a Canon T2I, tokina 10-17mm in a Aquatica Housing.
Life on a Cucumber! It is amazing what you can find if you don't leave any rock un turned or cucumber as well.
UnNatural Colour! The colours and shapes under the sea are amazing. This Hot Pink Frogfish sure stood out when moving but blended in almost perfectly in the sponges. So strange to see an ambush hunter hidingout with such a loud outfit:)
I have seen and used alot of showers but seeing this Blenny using a shower head as a home was a first. We were amazed at how the fish used everything to hide in.
Twin Rocks is famous for its jacks but these smaller fish schooled together to look like a huge fish I had to take the picture. The pinnacle, fish and sun made for a great photo.
shortlistedShortlisted!
"Hiding in Beauty" This little crab was hiding amoungst the spines of a fire Urchin. Taken with a 100m macro and +10 diopter. I love the ocean so many wonderful things to sea smile
One of the worlds most deadly marine animals but singularly one of the most beautiful and vibrant at the same time. This small Blue Ring Octopus paused just before jetting away.
