Both male and female sailfins are located on the sandy bottom near the hang line in 20-25 feet of water. These tiny blennies are shy and require patience if you want to see them fully emerge from their holes. The male's performance with sailfin up lasts only a couple of seconds. His movement is fast so using a high shutter speed is necessary to stop the action.

Male sailfin blenny displaying for the attention of a nearby female. This little fellow is about 5 cm long and very shy. I waited close to 30 minutes for him to emerge fully from his hole with sailfin up.
