A device that increases the effective area of a light-source, i.e. makes it less point-like. This is usually a piece of opal or translucent plastic that can be fitted to the front of a light source.
A diffuser helps to even-out the distribution of light intensity in the field of illumination, and reduces the problem of specular reflection from the subject.
