Anodisation
An electrolytic process for forming a stable film of aluminum (aluminum) oxide on the surface of aluminum alloys. Aluminum will normally grow an oxide layer on contact with air; but the layer formed in the anodisation process is harder and less porous, giving improved corrosion and abrasion resistance, and can be made to incorporate pigments as an alternative to painting the finished product. Many underwater components are anodised to protect them from seawater.
