When the operating system on your computer is Windows Me

Recommended settings

Further settings to reduce packet loss

Notes

  • If you wish to capture images from a MICROMV device, or export a final movie product to a MICROMV device, you must connect the MICROMV device (to your computer) and turn it on before starting MovieShaker. For further information about connecting MICROMV devices, see the Operating Instructions that came with your device.

  • Be sure not to disconnect the i.LINK cable or turn off the power of the MICROMV device while running MovieShaker.

  • If you do not see the introduction movie of Windows Me, the dialog box which prompts you to see the introduction movie appears. This dialog box may cause problems while capturing or exporting. To avoid this problem, watch the entire introduction movie to avoid this problem.

Recommended settings

Configure a drive for saving movie files

Designate the drive on your hard disk to save movie files captured from or to be exported to MICROMV devices*.

Packet loss may occur when the hard disk is highly fragmented, making it difficult to read or write large amounts of data at high speeds when capturing and exporting movie files. To reduce this problem, reformat or optimize (defrag) the hard disk periodically to maintain sufficient blocks of free space where MovieShaker movie files are usually saved.

Use the D drive or some other drive for saving movie files. If the C drive is used for saving files, the hard disk is easily fragmented and may require a long time to defragment.

For models that do not have a factory set partition, create a drive for saving movie files before using MovieShaker.

* Before exporting a final movie product to a MICROMV device, the movie file is temporarily saved in the hard disk drive. The temporary file is deleted automatically after exporting the movie product to a MICROMV device.

Hint

Using MovieShaker requires sufficient free disk space in the drive where you save movie files.

To process files, you need disk space for saving data captured from MICROMV devices, data created while processing movie files, and data to be exported.

Therefore, ensure that you have free space three times the size of the total data you want to save. The size criteria for MICROMV movie files saved to the hard disk is 4 GB for approximately 40 minutes.

Activate hard disk DMA settings

Follow the steps below to activate DMA transfer on your hard disk. This minimizes the load on the CPU.

  1. Select "Settings" from the Windows "Start" menu, and then click "Control Panel."

    The "Control Panel" window appears.

When the "System" icon is not displayed, click "view all Control Panel options" on the "Control Panel" window.

  2. Double-click "System."

The "System Properties" dialog box appears.

  3. Click the "Device Manager" tab, and then double-click "Disk drives."

The disk drives connected to the computer are displayed.

  4. Double-click the disk drive for saving movie files captured from or to be exported to MICROMV devices, and then click the "Settings" tab.

The settings for the disk drive appear.

  5. Confirm that "DMA" is checked. If it is not, click to select it.

    DMA transfer is activated.

  6. Click "OK."

The "System Properties" dialog box reappears.

  7. Click "Close."

When the "Do you want to restart your computer now?" message is displayed, click "Yes," and Windows restarts.

Settings for computers running Microsoft Office (e.g., models preinstalled with Microsoft Excel/Word/Outlook)

Follow the steps below to deactivate "Find Fast" of Office 2000 Personal.

However, if "Find Fast" is not installed on your computer, this setting is not necessary.

  1. Select "Settings" from the Windows "Start" menu, and then click "Control Panel."

    The "Control Panel" window appears.

When the "Find Fast" icon is not displayed on the "Control Panel" window, this setting is not necessary.

  2. Double-click "Find Fast."

    The "Find Fast" window appears.

  3. Uncheck "Run when I log on" in the "Index" menu.

  4. Select "Close and Stop" from the "Index" menu.

Stopping the PCHealth Scheduler of the Data Collection

Follow the steps below to set PCHealth Scheduler (Data Collection) not to operate when starting MovieShaker.

  1. Select "Settings" from the Windows "Start" menu, and then click "Control Panel."

    The "Control Panel" window appears.

  2. Double-click "Scheduled Tasks."

The "Scheduled Tasks" window is displayed.

  3. Double-click "PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection."

The "PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection" dialog box appears.

  4. Uncheck "Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time)" on the bottom of the "Task" tab.

This sets so that "PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection" is not executed.

  5. Click "OK."

An 'x' is displayed at the lower left of the "PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection" icon.

Note

This setting is disabled when Windows is shutdown. You must make the setting each time you start Windows.

Further settings to reduce packet loss

Packet loss may still occur despite the above settings.

Make sure you perform the following procedures to further reduce the occurrence of packet loss.

Disconnect all USB-interface peripherals

Some USB-interface devices (or their drivers) place a large load on the CPU, and may cause packet loss to occur.

If you experience packet loss and there is a USB-interface device connected to your computer, either disconnect the device from the computer or set the computer not to use it.

CD-ROM settings

Follow the steps below to deactivate automatic detection when a CD-ROM is inserted.

  1. Select "Settings" from the Windows "Start" menu, and then click "Control Panel."

    The "Control Panel" window appears.

  2. Double-click "System."

The "System Properties" dialog box appears.

  3. Click the "Device Manager" tab, and then double-click "CDROM."

The name of the CD-ROM drive connected to the computer is displayed.

  4. Double-click the CD-ROM drive to be used, and then click the "Settings" tab.

The settings for the CD-ROM appear.

  5. Uncheck "Auto insert notification."

Deactivates automatic detection when a CD is inserted.

  6. Click "OK."

  7. Click "Close" in the "System Properties" dialog box.

When the "Do you want to restart your computer now?" message is displayed, click "Yes," and Windows restarts.

Exit all software

Exit all software currently running before starting MovieShaker. Also, deactivate or exit from software that regularly update their status and change their displays, such as screen savers or some printer utilities.

Create a sufficient block of free disk space on the hard disk

Run Disk Defragmenter or format the destination hard disk or hard disk partition for saving MICROMV movie files captured from or to be exported to MICROMV devices so that there is a sufficient block of free disk space available.

Please see Windows' online help for instructions on how to defragment or format a hard disk.

Disconnect your computer from the network

If you use a network adaptor, disconnect the network cable connected to the adaptor. You can also set up Windows not to use the network adaptor as a means of disconnecting your computer from the network.

Disable Active Desktop

Follow the steps below to disable Active Desktop.

  1. Right-click the mouse on the desktop.

  2. Point to "Active Desktop."

  3. Uncheck "Show Web Content" if it is checked.

If the previous adjustments have not improved the situation, you might get better results following the steps below.

Virtual memory settings

See below to configure the amount of virtual memory that Windows uses. For further information, see Settings for virtual memory.

  • The "Minimum" and the "Maximum" options should be the same amount, and should be 1024 MB or more.

(For example, when you enter "1024" in the "Minimum" option, you should set "Maximum" to "1024."

Note

If the amount of virtual memory is small, problems may arise when executing commands of software. If this happens, increase the value of virtual memory. However, when not using MICROMV devices, it is recommended to revert back to the former virtual memory settings to allow Windows to manage them.
