Limitations and notes for capturing from or exporting to DV devices

Specifications

Limitations

Notes

Specifications

See the Readme file for DV devices supported by MovieShaker.

Limitations

General limitations

  • A minimum of 128 MB internal memory is required.

  • MovieShaker does not support the reading or writing of data from/to the memory of DV cassettes equipped with Cassette Memory.

  • Titles created by the index title function of DV devices cannot be captured.

  • Compressed drives are not supported.

  • System standby mode is not supported during capturing or exporting.

  • When a source tape is recorded in the LP mode, it is recommended that you play it back or capture images using the same DV device which is used for recording the tape. Using a different DV device may cause problems during playback or make capturing impossible.

  • Multi-monitor is not supported.

  • Do not run MovieShaker simultaneously with any other software using DV devices. Otherwise, the DV devices are not recognized by MovieShaker.

  • Do not run MovieShaker simultaneously with any other movie software.

  • Running MovieShaker with the hard disk drive connected using an i.LINK or USB cable may cause the software to malfunction. In this case, exit MovieShaker and stop using the device, and then restart MovieShaker.

  • If you are using the Windows XP/Windows Me operating system and connect a DV device to your computer for the first time, connect the DV device before starting MovieShaker. After the device is recognized, you can use MovieShaker. The device is recognized by your computer if its icon is displayed by double-clicking the "My Computer" icon.

  • If you are using the Windows Me operating system and connect a digital video deck to your computer for the first time, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box appears. When the "AV/C Tuner" is detected, select "Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended)" and click "Next." Even if you view the message that Windows did not find the software for the device, it will not influence on the operation of MovieShaker.

Limitations when capturing images

  • If a heavy load is put on the CPU or hard disk while capturing images from DV devices, lost frames may occur. To reduce this problem, set up your computer according to Configuring your computer for use with DV devices (Be sure to read this.).

  • Whenever MovieShaker encounters a video sequence with different audio modes during capturing, another file is created to save the portion after the point the audio mode changes. Sound may be lost at the beginning of the new file.

  • Copy-protected images cannot be captured.

  • If the available free disk space becomes less than 50 MB at the start of capturing, a message appears saying that the disk space is insufficient. In this case, any attempt to start capturing will fail, regardless of its time (size). Capturing will be stopped if the available free disk space becomes less than 50 MB while you are capturing images.

  • When a source tape is recorded in 2 languages, movie files are captured in stereo mode (the main sound channel and the sub-channel are assigned to the right and the left speakers).

  • If the destination folder for saving files is compressed or encrypted, capturing will not be performed correctly.

  • It is impossible to capture images from a DV device directly onto removable media (e.g., CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW discs, etc.), or memory cards (e.g., Memory Stick media, etc.).

Limitations when exporting final movie products

  • When a digital video camcorder is connected to your computer, your final movie product will not be exported properly unless the input switch on the video camcorder is set to DV.

  • The actual recorded time of blank-image frames, which are recorded at the end of the final movie product to avoid recording image noise interference, may not match the one you set.

  • If a heavy load is put on the CPU or hard disk while exporting a final movie product to a DV device, frame duplication may occur. To reduce this problem, set up your computer according to Configuring your computer for use with DV devices (Be sure to read this.).

  • You cannot do insert editing and perfect splice recording when a final movie product is exported to a DV device.

Depending on the DV device, the beginning of the final movie product may be cut off. To avoid this problem, set to record a blank-image frame (black frame) at the beginning of the final movie product.

  • Exporting a final movie product to a DV device is not possible when the DV device is engaged in recording or if it is set to pause while in a recording session.

  • Distorted images or sound skips may result during playback of movie files that have been recorded in different modes (SP and LP).

  • The clip information stored in the videotape (e.g., the recorded date and time, etc.) is not kept in the final movie product of MovieShaker.

  • If the destination folder for saving files, or the final movie product is compressed or encrypted, exporting will not be performed correctly.

Notes

  • If you wish to capture images from or export a final movie product to a DV device, and the operating system on your computer is Windows Me, you must connect the DV device (to your computer) and turn it on before starting MovieShaker. For further information about connecting DV devices, see the Operating Instructions or the online manual that came with your computer.

  • Be sure not to disconnect the i.LINK cable or turn off the power of the DV device while running MovieShaker.

  • It is time-consuming to export a final movie product to a DV device. The use of AC power is recommended, not batteries.

  • Do not plug/unplug the peripherals from your computer (including PC cards or DV devices, etc.), or turn your computer on/off while capturing images or exporting final movie products with MovieShaker.

  • Do not launch any software, operate Windows (e.g., moving windows, etc.). Do not plug/unplug the removable disk drive, or eject/insert the media while capturing images or exporting final movie products with MovieShaker.

  • Do not use the i.LINK Network (or Smart Connect) connection while capturing images or exporting final movie products with MovieShaker.

  • Do not perform capturing or exporting operations with MovieShaker while the DV device is engaged in recording or getting ready for recording.

  • Do not change any screen setting in the Windows "Display Properties" while running MovieShaker.

  • If the operating system on your computer is Windows XP, MovieShaker stops capturing, recording, etc., when another user logs on using "Fast User Switching." Therefore, the interrupted operation must be done again after the original user logs on.

  • Before starting any operation, make sure that the DV device is properly connected and that the desired videotape is inserted.

  • If the operating system on your computer is Windows XP, correct operation cannot be assured if you start MovieShaker from the "Remote Desktop."

  • Do not start MovieShaker from the "Remote Desktop" as it places a heavy load on the computer and network.
