Close up of a peacock mantis shrimp looking straight toward the camera. Mantis shrimps are usually very shy but this one eagerly inspected me and my camera. I had to cautiously keep my distance fearing its famous punch from damaging my gear.

When spotting a whip coral check the surface of the coral if there is a variation in texture. It will probably be a whip coral shrimp as they are perfectly camouflaged with the coral s colour and polyp structure.Jan_2024

Along the south west face are Caves. One can snorkel to them. visibility is not good due to surge.
Astola Island is pristine and uninhabited. We have to try and make it into a marine reserve.
