Manta Alley

   Indonesia  Flores Sea
Manta Alley located about Tora Langkoi Bay was described in the briefing as a deep gully that funnels the changing tide at up to 3-4 knots at the top and bottom of the tide, and could still be running at up to 1 knot during our dive at "slack water". A bit of a giveaway from the name of the site, but this signature Komodo dive is the main location in Komodo to find manta rays - often as many as 10 or 20. It's a rock islet that just punctures the sea's surface in a small craggy chain, inside the bay along the south coast of Komodo.

Streamed out on the end of your reef hook, are exposed to the full force of the current, so your valve free-flows as you face into it, your hose vibrates like a guitar string and mask is likely to fill with water whenever turn a head

You'll start your dive to the east of the rocks where another submerged mound rises to just a few metres below the surface. In the lee area between this mound and the rocky islet, where the maximum depth is 15 metres, there are almost always a couple of juvenile mantas playing around.

Another option however, is to drop down the steep eastern slope of the mound to the site's deepest section. Follow the slope of orange soft corals and encrusting invertebrates down to depth where giant trevally, white tip and black tip reef sharks roam in search of food. Make your way round to the north and in the direction of the islet chain, keeping alert for some huge black fantail rays resting on the bottom of the reef's substrate.

Eventually you arrive at a series of 3 underwater channels that run between the islet and its most northerly rocky protrusion. The channels are 18 metres or so deep and quite wide. Often schools of large bumphead parrotfish hang out here and mantas circle this area too.

Once you're through the channels onto the west side of the islet, you'll be out of bottom time and making your way up to 5 metres. Again the shallows here seem to be a favourite jaunt with manta rays. If the rays are not present then watch the surge areas close to the rocks. These are home to some formidably sized fish such as mangrove red snapper, emporers and giant sweetlips. Great barracuda often patrol here too.

Manta Alley is always one of the most frequently requested dives on any Komodo liveaboard, provided that you can handle the chill of these southern waters.

Gladden Spit, East of Placencia, Belize

   Belize  Caribbean Sea
Daily boat trip is about 90 minutes to the dive site. To see the whale sharks, its important to dive 2-4 days after a full moon and the best months are April, May and June. Placencia is a pretty quaint little town, nothing like the far busier San Pedro. Seahorse Dive Shop is probably the best in the area and the owners are fantastic divers and captains.

Chuuk Lagoon

   Micronesia  Pacific
Oil and aviation fuel dribble from this 454 foot cargo vessel in 200 feet of water. Ship lies with a 45 degree list to the port side. She was attacked by nine planes from Bunker Hill, and was hit by a 1,000 lbs bomb and a solid torpedo hit. She burned and quickly sunk. The No.1 hold contains only a few crushed 55 gallon drums and there is a large car too. There is a 10 foot long aileron (paravane) used for mine sweeping hanging off the port side. There is a large hole from the torpedo hit on the starboard side of the hold. There is a stern gun, and the ship's planking is burned from the fire. The ship's safe was salvaged in recent time, but its contents were not publicized.

Today the Amagisan Maru lies on a gentle slope with the bow in less than 30 metres and the stern in 58 metres. The wreck has a 45 to 50º list to the port and faces back towards the southern end of Uman Island.

This is an interesting wreck, it's only a pity it is in such deep water. There was a fuel tanker truck on the deck when the ship went down. It has slid off the deck and lies on the sand next to the forward hold. The forward masts has fallen over and hit the cabin of the tanker, crushing it.

There is a large bow gun still intact, and the anchor can be see lying out on the sand with the chain running all the way back into the ship. The forward number 1 hold is mainly empty except for a few empty fuel drums. Hold number 2 contains some aircraft wings and more barrels. At the rear of the hold is a car with its cab mostly intact.

The Manacles, Lizard point

   United Kingdom  Atlantic (European coastal)
This area of reef covering approximately one square mile, is an abundance of shipwrecks and reefs ranging from 8m to 80m. There has been more loss of shipping here than on any other comparable reef on the entire south coast of Britain, with over 110 ships and more than 1,000 lives lost.

Located less than one mile from the launch site, the Manacles, one of the best dive sites on the south coast of Cornwall, offers some of the most exciting diving in the country.

Loads of Nudibranchs and if you are lucky even Basking sharks!!
