The site is protected by the local RAF base, who have also provided much of the artificial reef, including a helicopter and fire engine. Tight control of access so not suitable for casual attendance - you need to get there via a local dive operation who will book the time slot.
Once there, just enjoy! A very easy dive - my wife had just completed her Open Water - but an incredable amount of fish, all very interested in people. Very shallow - max 6m/20ft depth so non-divers could even snorkel there, but check with the dive operators first. Photo opportunities beyond compare, and youll run out of time before you run out of air at those depths!

Dwejra has about 4 dive sites and a multitude of possibile dives. You can start from the inland sea and swim out through a tunnel, start from the Blue hole and then swim out. You can also opt for a boat dive to Crocodile rock where depths of 40m are easily reached. The swim out of the tunnel has some spectacular photographic opportunities, and it was this site that encouraged me to take up underwater photography. There is also the Coral Garden, with some lovely colours. There is also a large cave to the right of the inland sea, but this should be undertaken as a boat dive as there is a long swim.
Its one of the few place in the Maltese archipelago where one can see large groupers.
One of the main attractions of this area is the colour of the sea. The blue here is like nowhere else in Malta or Gozo.
This area is very popular with tourists all year round.
I hope more people visit the islands to see our extensive heritage, the oldest erect building in the world is in Malta, and our clear blue waters with many wrecks and sites to visit.

The highlights are 'Mexican Hat' , 'Aladdin's Cave' , 'Three
Tunnels' and the night dive on 'Rabbit Island' .
Mexican Hat was excellent! We descended to approx 20 metres from where we
entered a tunnel (3-4 m in diameter) through which we finned upwards until we
did a safety stop at 6 m where the water becomes like a 'heat haze': natural
spring water mixing with the salty seawater. We surfaced in the most amazing
'cavern' and when we turned our torches off we could see the light coming
through the rocks and the sea shone a brilliant turquoise. Another dive site
similar to this one was Aladdin's Cave, but where we surfaced there was a hole
in the top of the rocks and it was equally beautiful with the sun shining
through to the water where we bobbed about on our inflated BCD's. The Three
Tunnels was another 'adventurous' dive as it involved diving in and out of
narrow ravines. The highlight of that dive was waiting for the group to emerge
and seeing the air bubbles permeate through the tunnel 'roofs'.
Rabbit Island night dive was fun as my buddy and I busily searched 'Navy
Seals style'(!) with our torches under rocks and in nooks and crannies and felt
a sense of achievement when, amongst the more usual array of marine life, we
discovered 2 octopus and watched as one changed color to a pale blue and then a
pale pink. We also saw a red baby octopus with white spots, not such a great
camouflage!
There were only two disappointing dives (in terms of lack of sea life and
topographical interest): Aldiana Bay and one of the night dives at Aquarium
Reef . Aldiana Bay, I gathered from general chit chat, is not considered one
of the better dive sites and it is possible that we just got bad timing with the
night dive at Aquarium Reef. Rabbit Island for the night dive, however, we
recommend highly.

is a wall\rock dive down to 30mtrs with
Amphora to spy.
BANJA , Very rocky with lots of holes to poke about in.
The GARDA is a flat wreck and worth a good rummage and at 23 metres
SESTRICA , Lighthouse rock. A site with rocks within 2mtrs of the surface
in the middle of a channel we thought maybe we would find something, afraid not,
but lots of life.
MAJSAN , a swim down to 30mtrs to look at an anchor dumping ground
including a thirteenth century anchor, three metres tall stood upright on the
bottom
The BOCA , in 10mtrs a total awe-inspiring 28yr old huge wreck which
stands proud of the surface. It is very intact with all parts assessable
including the engine room, machine shop with lathe, cargo, spare prop, main prop
and portholes. (Don't touch). The story is that the skipper was drunk and didn't
see the shore, bang. You can see the hulls concertina shape as the bow stopped
and the stern didn't. You must visit this site.
DUBA East , Octopus reef, 25mtrs Octopus and Conger.
DUBA West , A rocky wall dive with Amphora wedged in the rocks.

The wreck of this cargo ship is 50+ meteres to the bottom. It is covered in red and yellow coral which is unusual for the med.

There's not many dives you can do that give you two wrecks for the price of one!
We did this as an intro dive. We all wanted a shallow wreck.
This dive can be done from the shore but we did it as a boat. We headed south along the sea wall and basically where it finished we went in! You could easily find it from shore using the same rules.
There's a telegraphic cable you can conveniently follow to find the wrecks.
I was pleasantly surprised by the profuse marine life. Loads of small stuff but with plenty of fish too. The species here are hybrid Med/Atlantic.
The wrecks are both upright and small enough to explore in their entirety in one dive.
Nothing tricky or dangerous on this dive. Ideal to try out your gear before exploring one of Gib's other larger wrecks.

Make sure that you use a marker buoy or you are likely to get hit on the head by boats going from Malta to Gozo. The site is accessed through a narrow inlet where a snorkel of approx 10 mins will give you the option of either turning left where a reef is located, or right for a large cave. Either option will give good subjects for photography.

I found this dive hard work on the legs but worth it. You start off by swimming down a crevice to a sandy-bottomed cave which ended up at about 26 m. Then there is a chimney that you go up where you end up at a more shallow depth. We saw a slipper lobster (that's the one with the funny looking armour. Good opportunity for macro with coral and nudibranchs, and also some good shots of a couple of eels and a huge fan mussel.

The Dive centres around a rocky outcrop that has caves and tunnels. We saw an octopus who didn't want his picture taken, lots of nudibranchs (my favourite, a few sea bream and plenty of macro subjects. Our dive guide also pointed out a mussel called Pinna nobilis fan mussel which is apparently a protected species in Italy.

We descended the anchor line, and came to some rocks at around 7 m, and then the bottom ran slowly down till 30m. The area was very rocky but we found some tunnels and caves abundant in nudibranchs, egg spirals, sea squirts, small sea fans. It was mainly macro photography, although we did spot a conger eel and a couple of crawfish. There are no big fish here, but plenty of life around to photograph, and the water was warm, but i was wearing a wet suit.
