Dear Dave, You have requested a review of your photo. It’s my pleasure to write you critical comments to help you to improve your work with an analytic review. As you remember, the objective is to see you here on UWP as a winner one day ! If you want to answer me, please wait until my review has been completed. As you already know the foreword, I will directly start my review : Photo Critique : First impression : A diver with closed eyes … why ? … then I’ve understood while reading your comment and seeing the humorous category. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

Technical ( score from 1-6, best is 6 ) : Exposure : 3, Colours: 4, Sharpness: 3, DOF ( depth of field ) : 4, Contrast : 3 Suggested Solution : The diver could be a bit more lighted (especially on the legs), that could help a bit for the colours. Sharpness could be improved a bit too. Why not, next time, using a higher shutter speed and/or smaller aperture (larger f-number) to darken the background (that is not important in this case). That could help to focus even more the view of the spectator on your subject. But the real place for improvement have to be found in the composition and in the approach. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

Composition : A centred subject a bit too small in the frame to notice immediately the detail you want to show. Suggested Solution : In general, don’t put your subject in the middle of the frame … that helps to break the symmetry. For what you want to show, I suggest you to be closer to your model to show the eyes shut. An upward angle of shooting could be used too to give some perspective to your picture…. like you’ve done it’s a bit to “flat” for me. A vertical frame could be a good idea in that case. Then with an upward angle of shooting, you can put your diver a bit up the frame. | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

Subject Perfect subject for the beginning … he’s not going to swim away … so you have plenty of time to try different settings for your shot … until you wake him up … lol. Again, the approach is for me not the perfect one in that case. Suggested Solution : It’s always important in a contest to try something different to draw attention to yourself You’ve taken in picture something unusual (even if the diver is not sleeping as we know) … who deserved to be better shown to be immediately understood (closer pic). | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member

Epilogue You’ve played your third picture in a category where it’s not so easy to have a winner picture. Nice challenge. I like to say that pictures must tell something, they should pass on a message or transmit an emotion; in that case, it passes me the message (I knew already) that it’s often boring to dive with a photographer. In general (and that’s more important for your buddy) when we (photographers) dive with a non-photographer, it’s important to implicate the buddy to avoid that situation for example (like using him as a real model, as a lighter, or what else …). Then it is always great to show him/her the pictures. Keep on the work and never stop to see pics from others to have always new ideas. I’m now looking forward to see your next post. All the best and happy bubbles. Raoul (UWP Photo Critic) --------Photo Critique completed-------- | Raoul Caprez 16756 point member
