Empire Mica

United States  Atlantic (North American coastal)
Empire Mica is a freighter sunk during WWII by two torpedoes from the German submarine U67, 33 seamen perished during the sinking. Horrified residents on the shore could see the ship as it drifted in flames for more than 24 hours. Exact location is 29° 18' 54.8 N 085° 21' 11.69 . One of the giant propellers from the ship was salvaged and sits in front of a popular seafood restaurant in Panama City, FL--Capt Anderson's. A spare prop was located on the deck of the ship, but that portion has since collapsed, and it is much more difficult to find.

   Maldives  Indian Ocean
at a cleaning station for mantas, we wre very lucky on our first dive to have these udewater 747's swim around us. This picture captures their size in realtion to the group of divers watching them, and makes us feel pretty small in the process

south male

   Maldives  Indian Ocean
we were just starting to chill out after the 2 morning dives offf of our liveaboard dive boat in the maldives, when all of a sudden we heard the shout "whalesharkey, whalesharkey". We grabbed our mask snorkel and fins and jumped in. There were several other boats int he area and it seemed everyone had converged on this whale shark. One of the things Cathy Vhurch had taughtme was not to swim linear with marine animals, but in arcs. I separated from the pack andparalleled the whale shark, watching his pectoral fins. When I saw him dip his left pec fin I know he would be coming in my direction. I froze in the water, just barely breathing and when he approached, I was rewarded with this shot.
