Spotted Bay

   Honduras  Caribbean Sea
This is a dramatic site with two walls. The first one ends in a sand patch at approximately 90 feet. The second goes well beyond the recreational dive limits. Fish and corals are plentiful here, and the top of the reef features a sand patch that is good for open water classes. Rays and turtles are often seen here. Unfortunately, we saw three lion fish here yesterday (November 2009).

Wreck of the Kolkhosnik

   Canada  Atlantic (North American coastal)
Lost in 1942 the Kolkhosnik was carrying war supplies destined for the port of Archangel. The official cause of the sinking is "U-boat activity" however, it is locally believed that the vessel struck Smithson Rock. The vessel was commercially salvaged for its cargo of nickel ingots, a few of which remain scattered around the wreck site. The other pieces of cargo such as tanks, barb wire, telephone cable and jeep parts had no value and were simply tossed aside by salvors. The wreck is one of the most popular among the local wreck/technical divers in Halifax. The depth (from 130 to 150 feet), water temperature and tidal conditions can make this a demanding dive. Careful planning and plan adherence are required.

SMS Markgraf

   United Kingdom  Atlantic (European coastal)
This is the best of the German high seas fleet wrecks scuttled at the end of WWI. If you scuba dive this wreck its best to do on a twinset but a rebreather is best. A good dive guide is here.

website

If you like wide angle wreck shots....this is the one.

It has also some good penatration places for internal pictures.

Laura's Wall, North End

   Cayman islands  Caribbean Sea
This was our first return to the Caribbean following several trips to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. To be honest, it was a little disappoiting compared to the Pacific.

Of course, Stingray City is a great dive and there were several turtle encounters, but there were NO sharks, few soft coral, and marginally healthy hard corals.

This is a good destination for new divers as there are few currents, enough animal life to keep it interesting, and very warm water; it was 86 degrees when we were there!

Ted's Point

   Honduras  Caribbean Sea
There is a small wall that goes to about 65 feet, then a sandy area with a coral encrusted BBQ grill and a small wreck. Most divers stay shallower than he wreck; however, it's possible to do a deep dive here by continuing past the wreck. The bottom slopes gradually past the wreck to depths in excess of 130 feet (my personal max depth on this site).

In addition to the regular gang of reef fish, both adults and juveniles, we often see spotted eagle rays, large green morays, and turtles here. I've also seen seahorses and a toad fish at this site. Dolphins regularly pass through.

Blackish Point

   Honduras  Caribbean Sea
This is the most popular site for drift diving in Utila. The primary wall descends to approximately 70 feet, and then there is a sloping descent to a sandy bottom. Along the sand channel that separates these two areas, divers drift past caverns where they see abundant marine life. Spotted drums, squirrel fish, moray eels, trunk fish, trigger fish, turtles, sting rays, and midnight parrot fish are the standard fare.
