Churna Island

   Pakistan  Arabian Sea
Cherna Island
The majestic Cherna Island, a solitary rock bravely faces 50 years of target practice by the Nay this is the only place in vicinity of Karachi city where we find coral reef. Cherna Island is a popular place, for fishing, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling. But often the villager are creates problems for picnickers.

“Our valuable Marine Life”

Jan 15th Divers from “Karachi Scuba Diving Center” were diving at Bachum Reef near Cherna Island, the visibility was 40 to 60ft. normal for the month of January. The reef was full of life the color full fishes were busy swimming in and around the rocky formation. This is one of the best dive sites we have near Karachi shore, where the 40 ft drop from the top of the Plato, which is already 50 ft. deep, to the bottom reaches at a depth of 90 ft makes this dive site perfect location for a deep dive training site.

The Second dive was planned at Cherna Island north-west point, 40 ft deep dive, the visibility was excellent, and water current was pretty strong, moving westerly. Due to the strong current boat anchor could not hold properly and the boat drifted while we were gearing up we decided to make drift dive and discover new ground. We descended on anchor line and started swimming across the current towards the island. Suddenly we notice small patches of coral about 6 to 18 inches diameter and 10 t0 12 inches high approximately 20 ft. apart. And the density increases as we moved towards the island and to our surprise we landed in a good size of coral reef.

There have been small patches of reef existing earlier but this one was gorgeous. A variety of corals we found were simply astonishing, The biodiversity on the reef was remarkable; we noticed different types of Sponges, Anemones, Worms, Crustaceans, Bryozoans, Molluscs, Echinoderms, and a large selection of coral fishes we explore the new found reef for good 40 minutes the maximum time we were allowed to stay at that depth before getting into decompression problems. After surfacing we marked the reef site into our GPS and from January onwards we made 10 dives to explore the reef and documented the following marine life in the form of pictures and video clips.

Corals: - Brain Coral, Disk corals, Brown boulder corals, gorgonian, Orange Daisy coral, Tentacle coral, Flex coral and many more Varity of coral.

Fishes: - Long fin Banner fish, Blue-ring fish, Sergeant fish, Chevron Barracuda, Parrotfish, and Black spotted Puffer, Blue-spotted Fantail Stingray, Yellow Snapper, Sweet lips, Coronation Grouper, Coral Grouper, and Giant grouper, many verity of Scorpion fish, Moray eels, were documented.

Anemone & Jellyfish:- Tube Anemones, Bulb-tentacle Sea anemones, Anemone coral, Upside down jellyfish, Stinging Hydrozoan etc.

Worms: - Striped Ribbon Worm, Fan Tube Worm, Bristle Worm, Spaghetti Worm, Christmas Tree Worm, Flat worm. and Peacock worm.

YONGALA wreck townsville

   Australia  Coral Sea
The "SS YONGALA" (pronounced yongula) is an awsome deep, wreck dive off cape bowling green, nth queensland. Is a massive cleaning, breeding, and feeding station for many types of marine life, including corals. It has become a healthy, established, site as its the only formation on the flat sandy bottom, for around 40 nautical miles in any direction. The ship went down in a cyclone in 1911, with over 100 passengers on board. It is part of the great barrier reef marine park, so is very well protected. You cannot penetrate this wreck due to the preservation laws, although its magnificent enough without penetration. Massive fish, beautifully coloured corals, sea snakes, sharks, turtles, eels, just about any marine animal you can imagine, and then theres the history, remains, eeriness of 110 meter ship wreck. Truely, a magnificent dive site!

Naiqoro Passage

   Fiji  Pacific
Wall dives on both sides of the passage also home to Spot X and the Japanese Gardens.

This passage offers one of the finest dives in Fiji, abounding in pelagic and reef fish, sharks and coral gardens exploding with colour.

The passage can experience some strong currents and with little up or down movement however, the diver can get the real ‘superman’ flying experience.

This passage is a marine reserve.

Gunbarrel

   Fiji  Pacific
The legendary ‘Gunbarrel’ – Not for first timers!

An adrenalin dive for the first part of the dive as you fly through an underwater canyon, herding the schools of snapper and surgeon fish through the narrow underwater gorge.

Graceful grey reef and white tip sharks glide up and down the walls through all the swirling fish. The canyon then opens up to an underwater beach where the current suddenly stops and we pause and wait for the sharks to return single file past us back into the channel. Then a short swim through takes us out into the clear blue of the Pacific.

The second half of the dive is very different – a leisurely meander over hard coral gardens and though a long, sunlit tunnel with a wavy sandy floor, before we drift up through the sun pierced blue to surface by the boat.

The Channel - Wakatobi

   Indonesia  Banda Sea
This was an amazing dive. First we swam along the wall at around 80 feet. when we came to the entrance of the cahnnel we hung on near the edge waiting to see ahrkes. We did see one shark, then when we let go we were swept into the channel for a wild ride!

Everthing flew past us as we drifted in to this inlet at several knots. Not the best for underwater photography due to the current, but a fantastic dive anyway!

Zenobia Wreck

   Cyprus  Mediterranean Sea
Zenobia is a Swedish roll-on-roll-off ferry fully loaded with 108 trailers and trucks, regustered to carry up to 140 passengers.
She sunk on her maiden voyage to Cyprus in 7 June 1980 off Larnaca's fishing harbor. Zenobia is now lying on her side at 42 meters.
Possition: 34,53.5 N, 33,39.1 E (1.500 meters from the shore). Most of diving in Cyprus is not very good. They have severely over-fished and there is not really any coral... BUT the Zenobia Wreck is an awesome dive and makes a trip there worth while! The wreck is so big that they usually have you dive half in the morning & half in the afternoon. Very cool.

Abaco -- The Edge & The Tunnel

   Bahamas  Caribbean Sea
Abaco Dive Adventures -- Tim Higgs, NAUI Instructor and Commercial Diver.
I ran into Tim shortly after moving to Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas in late August 2006. Due to the pressures of getting myself acclimated and "in the groove" with my work, I did not dive for some time. When I began to dive with Tim, I discovered one of the most knowledgeable and friendly Dive operators I have encountered in over 30 years of diving and instruction. I am also a Naui instructor, and while my Bahamaian work permit does not allow me to teach, I can strongly recommend Tim to anyone who wants any level of instruction.

We dove December 22, 2006 on both The Tunnel, a shallow, 15 to 20 foot reef and a bit later that morning on The Edge, a 65 foot reef dive. WOW! The shallow dive was one that was teeming with life. Yellow Tail Snapper, small Grouper, French Grunt, medium sized Parrot fish, Blue Chromis, several varieties of Damsel fish, several variety of Wrasse, Lobster (which the Bahamians usually call Crawfish), and Conch. It was a great, gentle dive with many swim-thrus and a memorial plaque set for a young man killed in a motorcycle crash, whose favorite dive was this site. This is an excellent place to take a first dive and see a great diversity of small and medium sea life, get used to the water after not diving for a while and just relax and get your groove. Slight current present along with some surge, it is shallow and we dove at the beginning of and exiting tide.

The Edge was a much different story. We planned to dive with a half gallon plastic juice jug filled with pieces of a Wahoo carcass that Tim had caught days earlier. The fish was chopped small and then filled with water making a sort of chum. The bighead of the Wahoo was tossed overboard to begin attracting fish as we prepared to dive. I was first in the water and settled down on the sand between coral heads at 20 feet to wait for the others. The Wahoo head was in a difficult place for the Yellow tail and small Nassau grouper (5 to 10 pounds) to reach, so I picked it up, and tossed it out in the open. As it settled toward the bottom a 70 pound plus Black Grouper came from nowhere, scooped it up and swallowed it. By then some other divers were down and quickly a 4 1/2 Gray Reef Shark showed up to cruise around. When we were all assembled, Tim led us over the edge and we settled in a nice sandy area at 60 feet where he unscrewed the bottle lid and began to squirt out some small pieces of fish. Soon, the Grouper were nosing our hands, I was able to handle and stroke the sides of one big guy who was about 40 pounds and that Shark kept crusing around us. He came within 2 feet of me, calmly swimming and watching. We kept the feeding under control and while the Groupers got a bit worked up, the Shark never got too crazy. This 50 minute dive was just delightful.

You also might consider diving the Blue Holes with Tim. These deep, inland holes are fascinating for their geographical and geological formations. I have only dove The Far Side, but it was spectacular. I no longer like extremely deep dives (getting older -- ha!) but we went 140 feet of the 230 feet possible in this hole. Lots of fossils in the walls. Just be skilled enough to do decompression diving and let Tim or someone with the experience lead you.

I recommend Tim and his operation anytime. And if you need a dive buddy while out here, drop me a note. I am always ready.

Darwin's Arch

   Ecuador  Pacific
Excellent place to see the entire BIG show. (whale sharks, hammerheads , grays, white tips, and galapagos sharks. Manta Rays, Spotted Eagle Rays, Large Green Moray Eels, etc...)

Currents were strong around Darwin's Arch but it made for a very exciting and dramatic couple of days. The diving was fantastic as we had 14 sightings of whale sharks in 2 days. Swimming out into the big blue through a curtain of hammerheads was the most incredible feeling. This place is truly magical and is a must visit if you are a serious diver.
