Cocos Island

   Costa Rica  Pacific
My first roll of film had 36 (different) big critters, one on each frame!

Isla del Cocos is a small island (8 sq miles) 255 miles off the Costa Rican coast and is one of the top 10 dives worldwide.

Sharks galore! Hammerheads (famous for schools), oceanics, whalesharks - you name 'em, they're here. I did get spooked on one dive when one big feller gave me the eye and I got out quick!

water temp was 75F so a thick wetsuit was needed.

Best sites - Manuelita islet and dirty rock

Mukilteo T dock

   United States  Pacific
Is very low viz most of the time but water clears at about 40 feet. Lots of divers go to this site for training. Has easy access to shore and a short surface swim. Great place to dive but not if low viz concerns you. I have gotten some great shots of octopus, starfish, crabs, lingcod, and a sculpture of an angel placed there by divers. I like this sight because of it’s easy access and rich marine life.

Tioman Island

   Malaysia  South China Sea
Tioman Island (locally, Pulau Tioman) is a small island located 32 km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang, and is some 39 km long and 12 km wide. It has eight main villages, the largest and most populous being Kampung Tekek in the north. Yet, the densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a scuba diving haven.

Its beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie, South Pacific as Bali Hai. In the 1970s, TIME Magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands.

Apart from its diverse marine life, the inland rainforest area, encompassing approximately 12,383 hectares, in Tioman is a strictly enforced nature reserve. There are several protected species of mammals on the island, including the Binturong, Long-tailed Macaque, Slow Loris, Black Giant Squirrel, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Mouse deer, Brush-tailed Porcupine, and Common Palm Civet, from a total of 45 species of mammals and 138 species of birds, including the majestic Frigatebird. Moreover, Tioman has species that are endemic to its shores. The soft-shelled turtle and the Tioman walking catfish are both unique and can be seen on rainforest walks.

The island is served by ferries from the Malaysian mainland, and a propeller plane service by Berjaya Air from Singapore (Seletar Airport) and Kuala Lumpur (Subang Airport)

Pulau Weh (Weh Island)

   Indonesia  Andaman Sea
Weh Island or Pulau Weh or Pulo Weh is a small active volcanic island to the northwest of Sumatra. It was originally connected to the Sumatran mainland and became separated by sea after the volcano's last eruption in the Pleistocene era.[1] The island is situated in the Andaman Sea. The largest city on the island, Sabang, is the westernmost outpost of Indonesia.

The island is known for its ecosystem; the Indonesian government has declared 60 km² of inland and sea around the island as a wildlife protection area. A rare megamouth shark species was found on shore and the island is the only habitat for the threatened toad, Bufo valhallae (genus Bufo). Coral reef areas around the island are known for their large variety of fish species.
