October 2014 – UW Photo Contest Winners

A monthly hotshot is an entry that was shortlisted by 2 or more judges. The monthly winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Runner Ups) are chosen from this short list by our editor (no medals, just your name in the lights for a month!). They are chosen according to the number of judges votes with some reference to the peoples votes and the editor’s choice. It is no coincidence that many of the Hotshots end up in the annual awards!
To get a chance to feature your photo in next month’s winners, enter your best underwater photo here.

The monthly winners for October have been announced. Thank you all for entering and Congratulations to the winners and runners up!

Check out October’s well deserved winners:

1st Place:

Crossways – Tarpon hunting Silversides. This is an image I’ve been striving for, for over a year now – learning and working on my lighting skills so that when the Silversides returned to Cayman, I could finally get this photograph.

Editor’s Comment:

Incredible shot!

Water.
I’ve been fascinated with it from before I can remember. Apparently my father – in trying to impress my parents’ female friends with his knowledge of babies – gently submerged me as a new-born into our pool. I couldn’t get enough of it.
I became PADI certified in 2008, and bought a cheap point-and-shoot camera with my husband to show our friends and family the wonders of the Caribbean Sea. With time, I got better gear along the way – currently I’m in love with 4/3 mirrorless cameras.
I feel I’ve only just begun really getting into underwater imaging. I’m most certainly still learning, and will always do so. I remind myself most of all to witness the beauty around me, all the time.
With photographs, it all comes back to that one thing in the end: Water. It inspires me. If I can show the beauty of water, and the crucial importance of water, and all nature’s gifts in it, in any conceivable way, I’ll have a happy soul.
The journey continues.

I now use a Nikon D4 SLR with Inon Z240 strobes, but also a compact Olympus Z-2. I love the Red Sea but have soft spots for a number of other locations, including Cuba, the East End of Grand Cayman, Bonaire and Ascension Island.
