trade secrets! Things the pro's don't want you to know! There are always connections implied between cuts: either in time, or space, or logical progression.

For instance, the inclination to believe that no time has elapsed between shots can be used to link action shots from different perspectives. Take a shot of a diver jumping into the water from the dive boat. Get them to do it again and film them this time from underwater. When you play it back you automatically assume it was taken at the same time, on two camcorders. This is also called an overlap shot.
