September 2016 – UW Photo Contest Winners

A monthly hotshot is an entry that was shortlisted by 2 or more judges. The monthly winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Runner Ups) are chosen from this short list by our editor (no medals, just your name in the lights for a month!). They are chosen according to the number of judges votes with some reference to the peoples votes and the editor’s choice. It is no coincidence that many of the Hotshots end up in the annual awards!
To get a chance to feature your photo in next month’s winners, enter your best underwater photo here.

The monthly winners for September have been announced. Thank you all for entering and Congratulations to the winners and runners up!

Check out September’s well deserved winners:

1st Place:

White eyes, inky black

Editor’s Comment:

A truly unique shot for many reasons. Getting so close to sharks is a special moment itself. The shark almost seems like a ghost. The movements are nicely captured through the turbulences/reflection at the surface. Well deserved winner.

The reflection on the calm surface is just perfect and so is the lighting and the colors. Amazing shot!

I use a Scubacam fiber optic snoot on occasion as well. I recently upgraded from a Canon t2i in a Sea & Sea housing that I used for about a year, before that it was a Panasonic compact. I live in Guam and have traveled around SE Asia in the past couple of years. The best diving I have experienced has been in Indonesia; Raja Ampat, Lembeh, Bali, Komodo.

Runner Up:

Simple playing around with the snooted strobe with an enlarged opening to get the effect

Editor’s Comment:

The effect by the snoot is putting the seahorse in a completely new light. I like the experimental factor.
