Nearly all underwater pictures are fully-lit or part-lit by a strobe. We also call this artificial light.

Taking our own light source with us underwater obviously extends the range of our photographic activities. However, it also creates some new problem areas.

But, despite annoying habits such as failing when you need them most, the underwater strobe is a wonderful device that allows the underwater photographer to restore colors and operate in low light situations; used intelligently and imaginatively, it can be 'played' like a musical instrument.
